Using an abstract, geometric, printed pattern as a background, I began working on a charcoal figure drawing. Then using a newsprint mask, cut while studying another pose, I created a second shadowy figure with acrylic spray paint. The piece was finished with extra touches of white paint and black charcoal to solidify the composition.

This piece was begun working from a figure model. Layers of paint, paper, and drawings built the composition. The figural outlines and gears speak to the concept of inner and outer self. The person you are perceived to be and the inner workings of your being.

Figure drawing meets narrative. Traditional housework done in tandem, a better way to do laundry. The piece was begun with acrylic markers on watercolor paper, then additional washes of acrylic paint were added to create form and atmosphere.

This piece began as an experiment in paint and resist. Using resist to “save” underlying areas of color, while using stencils and brush to mask other areas. Then working from the figure to complete the composition.

The delicacy of the human body is always a reminder of the balance of life and death. Even the strongest body can appear frail and easily broken. A thin, lithe man sits holding flowers, another reminder of the fleeting nature of life.
The process began with two canvasses attached to one another. Then a deep blue bar painted across the center. Quickly drawing the figure on the canvas with paint was the next step. Special emphasis is given to the elbows, shoulders, and knees through the choice of color (violet). The background gray areas were achieved with fluid acrylics and light washes of colors, to bring the figure forward in the space.
